In all my years of building a business from home I’ve often wondered why is it that some people are able to have great success building their business from home and some never even get to first base?

I mean is it just that some people have a special talent or special skills that enables them to realize great success? Maybe some people have some kind of secret tools or systems, maybe a specific lead source.

I’ve realized over the years and working with hundreds maybe even thousands of people that it is definitely none of those. Have you ever wondered the same thing to yourself?

I can remember in my early years in the industry more than twenty years ago, wondering this to myself while seeing people with obviously no special skills or talents being recognized for their amazing achievements and huge incomes. I used to wonder to myself… “What’s wrong with me?”

Well when it all started working for me and I was finally able to see real results with a business from home it all began to be quite clear to me just what was making the difference.

It can be summed up in two words.
Self-Discipline.

I realized that what was making the difference for me was the same thing I saw in others that were seeing great results. Just to be very honest and transparent with you, I will admit that in my early years I just did not have the self discipline it takes to build a business, any business, let alone a home-based business.

Looking back on it now I realize that is why I struggled for so many years in this industry. The bottom line is I just treated my business like it was a hobby. I worked at it sometimes and sometimes I didn’t. I would work real hard for a week or two then do nothing for a week or two, and the silly thing is I would sit there and wonder why it wasn’t working for me.

Well as I grew and matured I became more disciplined. I worked my business with the same commitment that I had given my employers for so many years. In other words I worked even when I did not feel like working. Much the same as when I had a job and worked for someone else, I would go to work even when I did not feel like going to work.

I remember over ten years ago I had just started another new venture with a company. I decided that I would work at my business as if the company was already paying me a six figure income. I had never earned a six figure income before this, but I imagined that if a company was paying me ten grand a month that I would do whatever they wanted me to do. I considered it my job. Just as I had done for so many years working for someone else that paid me half that much. I asked myself “if I would work so hard to earn 50 grand a year, how hard would I work for a hundred grand a year?”

Well it finally happened. After just two years with this company I finally was earning a six figure income, and residual income at that. Of course it changed my life and gave me the freedom that I had always dreamed of. Enabled me to take some vacations I had dreamed of in years past and so on.

The main thing I really wanted to pass on to you with this short article is that self-discipline is the key to your success. If you treat your business like a business and give it the same priority in your life that you have given to previous employers you will be able to have great success with your business.

It became clear to me years ago that there is a very fine line that separates the people that succeed and those that struggle. That fine line is “Self Discipline”. Work your business like a business and it will perform like a business, treat it like a hobby and it will perform like a hobby. Remember businesses make money and hobbies cost money.

I would like to also refer you to an excellent book on this subject. This will be an invaluable tool for anyone trying to build their own business. Even a traditional business, but especially a home-based business.

Learning this has actually changed the way I consider bringing on new business partners. It has made me gravitate more toward people that have already shown a great deal of self-discipline in their lives, such as other successful business owners, people with prior military experience, accomplished athletes and so on.

Self discipline is definitely the key to success in most anything in life, but especially business. Learn to exercise self-discipline in running your business and you will see great results.

This is always a favorite for my kids when we go to Red Robin’s. I hope you enjoy this recipe!  

When you get this at Red Robin they have added a blend of apple, raspberry and blackberry and it is made by Langer’s. Most any berry blend juice will do though. The sweeter the strawberries the better the smoothie flavor.

Red Robin Groovy Smoothie

* 1/3 cup frozen sweetened strawberries, thawed
* 1/2 banana
* 1/3 berry apple blend juice (any brand will due)
* 1/4 cup peach nectar
* 1/2 cup of ice
* 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
* Garnish with maraschino cherry of course

Combine ingredients in a blender and blend until smoothe. Serves 1, approximately 16 ounces.

Prioritize – Before you can be effective, you need to know what your main goals are for the day.  Time management works best when you recognize what are the key things that have to get done in that day. Nothing is worse than spending time climbing the wrong ladder.

Be Completely Organized – Organizing, and maintenance of all items will ultimately, effectively add more time back into your day. That way balance is maintained and clutter never becomes an issue. Professional organizers advise their clients that for every item brought into the house that another item must exit the house.

Stay Focused – When working on effective time management the key is to always put aside anything that does not pertain to what you’re working on. Actively reduce interruptions using systems and protocol.

Delegation – Learn how to delegate your work to other people. If you do this well, you can quickly build a strong and successful business, well able to meet the demands that others place.

Momentum – To become successful, you MUST have momentum behind you. While there are strategies to build momentum, here is another MUST-KNOW strategy to move you forward toward your own success: Find a Coach. When you choose your coach, make sure they have achieved what you’re looking to accomplish.

Be Self Disciplined- Self-discipline is important in any endeavor of life. It’s best defined as the ability to regulate one’s conduct by principle and sound judgment, rather than by impulse, desire, or social custom. Learn how to keep your environment clean and clear so you can function without a myriad of distractions. Such neatness will further develop self-discipline by forcing you to make decisions about what is important and what is not.

Be Aware Of Time And Be On Time– If you’re supposed to be somewhere at a specific time, be there on time. Being on time shows a life that is organized. It reveals a person whose desires, activities, and responsibilities are under control. Being on time also acknowledges the importance of other people and the value of their time.

Be consistent – Make sure that you are working effectively and consistently. If you only have 1 hour to spare, make sure that you make this 1 hour as productive as possible. Consistency and Time Management is Crucial to Success.

Don’t give up -  Start becoming the person you want to and don’t lose that focus. Whatever may happen or fail to happen, there is always one way or another, to keep going. You will get where you want to go when you consistently choose, in each moment, to simply, and thankfully keep going.
